Balscadden Road, Howth
This is a proposal for the rejuvenation of derelict lands adjacent the Martello Tower in Howth. The key elements of this scheme are a new village street, a new public space and the completion of the Martello Tower pedestrian circuit, a civic context for the Tower, safe and pleasant access to Balscadden Bay, and a residential development of 64 dwellings. The circular building is three storeys high on its outer radius and steps down to four storeys on the inner radius. The outer radius of the building is vernacular in appearance with simple narrow, window openings and a stone finish. Internally, the building has a more open nature with larger windows and balconies. The finishes here are lighter; white coloured render, copper-clad bay windows and timber detailing to balconies and private terraces. An appreciation of the positive features of Howth and its special character and sense of identity were important when formulating the design strategy for this new development. By integrating this project into the Howth landscape a continuity of urban form will be maintained and the local distinctiveness of place reinforced.
